Genshin Impact has a complex economy with multiple currencies, each serving a different purpose. Understanding how they work and where to earn them helps you spend efficiently and avoid common resource bottlenecks. This guide covers every major currency, where to farm each one, and how redemption codes fit into your overall resource strategy.
Primogems: The Premium Currency
Primogems are the most valuable currency in Genshin Impact. They are used to purchase Intertwined Fate and Acquaint Fate for Wishes (the gacha system), making them the primary way to obtain new characters and weapons. One Wish costs 160 Primogems, and reaching the pity guarantee on a character banner requires up to 14,400 Primogems (90 Wishes), though most players hit soft pity around 12,000 Primogems (75 Wishes).
Free-to-play Primogem sources include:
- Daily commissions: 60 Primogems per day (1,800 per month). The most consistent source available after AR 10.
- Events: Major events typically award 400 to 1,000 Primogems. With multiple events per patch, this is the second-largest source.
- Spiral Abyss: Floors 9 through 12 reset twice per month, offering up to 600 Primogems per cycle (1,200 monthly) for full clears.
- Exploration: Chests, puzzles, Waypoints, and Statues of The Seven across all regions. New regions add thousands of one-time Primogems.
- Archon and Story Quests: Main and character story quests reward Primogems on completion.
- Redemption codes: Livestream codes alone provide roughly 300 Primogems per patch (three codes at 100 each). Additional event codes bring the average to 300 to 600 Primogems per patch cycle. See our Code History for patterns.
- Achievements: Hundreds of achievements award 5 to 20 Primogems each, adding up to thousands over time.
- HoYoLAB check-in: Small monthly rewards including occasional Primogems.
A free-to-play player earning from all sources can expect roughly 60 to 80 Wishes per patch cycle (six weeks), depending on event generosity and exploration progress. This means you can generally guarantee a featured five-star character every two to three patches.
Mora: The Universal Currency
Mora is the gold currency used for almost every upgrade in the game: leveling characters, ascending characters and weapons, upgrading talents, enhancing artifacts, forging weapons, and purchasing items from shops. It seems abundant early on, but Mora becomes the most common bottleneck for mid-game and late-game players. Leveling a single character from 1 to 90 costs over 1.6 million Mora. Upgrading a full set of artifacts can cost another million or more.
Primary Mora sources include:
- Ley Line Blossoms (Blossom of Wealth): 60,000 Mora per 20 Original Resin. The most efficient farmable source.
- Daily commissions: Roughly 15,000 to 25,000 Mora per day depending on AR.
- Events: Most events include Mora in their reward shops.
- Exploration: Chests, particularly Precious and Luxurious chests, provide significant Mora.
- Redemption codes: Codes frequently include 10,000 to 50,000 Mora. Not a huge amount individually, but it adds up over time.
- Expeditions: Send characters on 20-hour expeditions to earn up to 5,000 Mora per character.
Character EXP Materials
Characters do not gain meaningful EXP from killing enemies. Instead, you use EXP materials: Wanderer's Advice (1,000 EXP), Adventurer's Experience (5,000 EXP), and Hero's Wit (20,000 EXP). Leveling a character from 1 to 90 requires approximately 420 Hero's Wit worth of EXP.
EXP material sources include:
- Ley Line Blossoms (Blossom of Revelation): The primary farmable source, costing 20 Original Resin per run.
- Events: Limited-time events often award Hero's Wit and Adventurer's Experience.
- Battle Pass: Both free and paid tiers include Hero's Wit rewards.
- Redemption codes: Codes commonly include Adventurer's Experience (5,000 EXP each) and occasionally Hero's Wit (20,000 EXP). While modest per code, these materials help offset the constant need for EXP.
- Chests and quests: Exploration provides a steady trickle of EXP materials.
Enhancement Ores: Weapon EXP
Weapons level up using Enhancement Ore, Fine Enhancement Ore, and Mystic Enhancement Ore. A five-star weapon from level 1 to 90 requires approximately 907 Mystic Enhancement Ore. Unlike character EXP, you can forge Enhancement Ores daily at the blacksmith using Crystal Chunks and White Iron Chunks found throughout the open world.
- Daily forging: Up to 30 Mystic Enhancement Ore per day using Crystal Chunks and Original Resin (or 6 per day for free using Magical Crystal Chunks with Resin).
- Events and Battle Pass: Regular sources of free Enhancement Ores.
- Redemption codes: Codes often include Fine Enhancement Ore (2,000 weapon EXP) or Mystic Enhancement Ore (10,000 weapon EXP). These supplement your daily forging.
- Random events: Quick world events sometimes drop Enhancement Ores.
Resin-Gated Materials
Several critical upgrade materials can only be obtained by spending Original Resin:
- Talent books: Required to level character talents (skills). Farmed from Domains of Mastery, with specific books available on specific days of the week.
- Weapon ascension materials: Required to ascend weapons past level caps. Farmed from Domains of Forgery, also on a rotating daily schedule.
- Boss drops: Normal bosses (40 Resin) drop character ascension materials specific to each element. Weekly bosses (30 Resin, discounted for three runs per week) drop talent upgrade materials for high-level talent levels.
- Artifacts: Farmed from Domains of Blessing at AR 45 or above for guaranteed five-star drops. Artifact farming is the biggest long-term Resin sink in the game.
Since Resin is limited to 200 and regenerates slowly, planning your Resin spending is one of the most important skills in Genshin Impact. Prioritize your main DPS's upgrades first, then support characters. Our Beginner's Guide covers Resin management in more detail.
Event Currencies
Most limited-time events introduce a temporary currency earned by completing event activities. These currencies can be exchanged in the event shop for valuable rewards: Primogems, Hero's Wit, Mora, talent books, weapon ascension materials, Crown of Insight (for max talent level), and sometimes exclusive weapons or furniture.
Event currencies expire when the event ends, so always clear the event shop before the deadline. Events are one of the most efficient ways to get resources since they do not cost Resin. HoYoverse typically runs one to three events concurrently during each patch, making them a core part of the resource loop for active players.
How Redemption Codes Fit In
Redemption codes are often overlooked as a resource source, but they provide consistent free value across multiple currencies. A typical version livestream drops three codes worth roughly 300 Primogems total plus supplementary Mora, EXP materials, and Enhancement Ores. Additional event and promotional codes appear between patches.
Over the course of a year, redemption codes contribute an estimated 2,000 to 4,000 free Primogems, equivalent to 12 to 25 extra Wishes. That is roughly one to two extra chances at a five-star character per year, just from codes. When combined with Mora and material rewards, codes serve as a reliable passive income stream that every player should take advantage of.
